Lawrence Jodrey curlew@shell1.shore.net Nantucket Island, Massachusetts The first PIPING PLOVERS arrived right on schedule at Eel Point and the AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER count is up to 8, with birds ranging from Pimney Point to Coskata. OSPREYS are inspecting nesting platforms which are spread out around the island marshes and at Bartlett Farm there were GREEN-WINGED TEAL, KILLDEER and 1 SNOW GOOSE. Both SCAUP, HOODED MERGANSERS, RING-NECKED DUCKS and the TUFTED DUCK with its long tuft blowing in the wind were all seen at Miacomet Pond, while nearby there was a HERMIT THRUSH scratching around last year's garden and a small flock of GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS. Hawks were present, with a SHARP- SHINNED, MERLIN, COOPER'S, RED-TAILED and NORTHERN HARRIER all reported and at Great Point, a PEREGRINE FALCON was seen on the lighthouse railing. Also present at Great Point and Coskata were SNOW BUNTINGS, HORNED LARKS, an IPSWICH SAVANNAH SPARROW and a SNOWY OWL. At Low Beach there were several ICELAND GULLS, 100 SANDERLINGS, a RED-THROATED LOON, NORTHERN GANNETS and a BLACK GUILLEMOT. Two SHORT-EARED OWLS were observed near Long Pond, a KINGFISHER at Folger's Marsh, AMERICAN WOODCOCK displaying in Madaket and a wintering BROWN THRASHER was still present at a feeder on the edge of town. The most interestng report of the past week was a possible SANDHILL CRANE at Slosek's Farm. -End transcript
