An impressive variety of birds were identified during the Audubon Society's Block Island birding weekend, however weather conditions weren't conducive to migration, and as a result, overall numbers were down from recent years. Some of the highlights from the 30th to the 1st included, EARED GREBE, GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD, WARBLING VIREO and AMERICAN BITTERN. Other birders not participating in Audubon's program reported a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, TENNESSEE WARBLER, MOURNING WARBLER and 1 BARN OWL. A GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH was netted during the banding demonstration on the 1st. On the 3rd, 3 CASPIAN TERNS were reported at the Charlestown Breachway. Also seen there were 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 2 FORSTER'S TERNS and 1 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHER. Napatree Point had a WESTERN SANDPIPER on the 3rd, along with 1 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER and 1 PEREGRINE FALCON. Reported from the Kimball Wildlife Refuge in the Watchaug pond area on the 1st were 6 BELTED KINGFISHERS, 6 RED-EYED VIREOS, 3 NORTHERN PARULAS,5 BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLERS, 3 BLACKPOLLS, 1 BAY-BREASTED WARBLER, 2 PALM WARBLERS, 1 NASHVILLE WARBLER, 1 PINE WARBLER, 1 HAIRY WOODPECKER, 6 GOLDEN CROWNED KINGLETS, 8 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS and 1 EASTERN WOOD-PEWEE. Two AMERICAN WIGEON, 2 NORTHERN PINTAILS, 2 GADWALLS were reported at Trustom Pond NWR on the 1st. At Fisherville Brook Wildlife Refuge in Exeter there were 2 WINTER WRENS, several PINE WARBLERS, 7 WOOD DUCKS, 6 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, 1 BROWN CREEPER and 2 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES on the 3rd. At Walkers Farm in Barrington there was a DICKCISSEL on the 25th. Other birds reported included 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER, 6 INDIGO BUNTINGS, 1 NASHVILLE WARBLER, 1 NORTHERN PARULA, 10 PALM WARBLERS, 2 COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, 1 LEAST FLYCATCHER and over 20 BOBOLINKS. On the 3rd, 1 YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, 2 INDIGO BUNTINGS and 1 SOLITARY SANDPIPER were recorded at Walkers Farm.
