The bill color was excellent and white above eye very pronounced. Surf Scoter 2/29/00 Rockingham Co., VA 1 male on a small pond near Harrisonburg. Surf Scoter 3/1/00 Rockingham Co., VA Seen at the "alternate pond". Directions:(1) Take exit 245 southbound from I-81. This is Port Republic Road (rt. 659), traveling away from Harrisonburg and James Madison University. (2) In about 3 miles, turn right at the crossroads of rt. 689. This is Spaders Church Road. (3) Proceed to the next crossroads, Pleasant Valley Road (rt. 679). Ahead of you across the intersection, you will see a Lutheran church. You will find parking space just past the intersection. (4) Returning to Pleasant Valley Road on foot, turn left and walk downhill for a quarter mile until you reach a sharp turn to the left. (Caution: this is a narrow road and traffic often moves very swiftly along it.) After you walk around the curve, you will find a row of cedars on the right. Through gaps in those trees, look downhill and you will see the pond on the right some distance away. The scoter spends much time feeding under water.
