Highlights this weekend include: from the West Meadows in Northampton: 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS, a PEREGRINE FALCON, a MERLIN, a PHILADELPHIA VIREO, an ORANGE CROWNED WARBLER _ which was found near the Ibis Pool _ 250 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, 12 SWAMP SPARROWS, 1 GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, 40+ SONG SPARROWS, 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, and 200+ SAVANNAH SPARROWS. At the Sand Pit off of Bay Road in Hadley, a spot that has been productive all week, the following species were seen: 2 BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, 8 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, 12 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 12 NASHVILLE WARBLERS, a CAPE MAY WARBLER, 10 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, and a MOURNING WARBLER. Also in Hadley on South Maple Street near Mill Valley Road: an OSPREY, a COOPER'S HAWK, 40 KILLDEER, 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, 3 COMMON SNIPE, 85 AMERICAN PIPITS, a BLUE-HEADED VIREO, and 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS. Saturday in Hardwick, highlights from the marshes of Pine Island include: 2 COMMON SNIPE, 1 RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER, 2 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 30 PALM WARBLERS, 15 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 5 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, 20 SWAMP SPARROWS, 25 SONG SPARROWS, 12 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, and 6 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS. SNOW GEESE have been on the move. The weather briefly put down two flocks this week, one of 25 birds in Northfield on Wednesday and another of 200 birds in Hadley on Friday. Wednesday at the Moran Refuge in Windsor the following birds were reported: an AMERICAN KESTREL, 2 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS, 75 AMERICAN ROBINS, 2 HERMIT THRUSH, 3 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, 3 RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS, 5 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, a NORTHERN PARULA, 2 BLACKPOLL WARBLERS, 100 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, 12 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, 1 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, and a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL. In Eastern Massachusetts two birds (presumably the same ones) which have called Massachusetts home for the past several winters are back again. There is an EARED GREBE in East Gloucester at Rocky Neck and at West Wauchacum Lake in Sterling there is a TUFTED DUCK.
