OLD CALEB'S PLACE by R. A. Parsons
They call it still Old Caleb Hancock's place: He cleared the land and altered so its face By labour he expended to reclaim It from the wilderness, it bears his name. He build a dwelling on it and a barn And 'stablished there in time a little farm, Wherefrom, as well as from his fish'ry near, His carpentry, he made enough to spare; So that his home was noted for its cheer And kindliness, for he rejoiced to share With those less fortunate, or more than he From love, or natural hospitality; Although when Caleb had himself begun To clear the land, with wealth then, next to none, He did not importune the rich for aid, Nor credit seek from friends of his in trade; Nor did he try or wish to demonstrate His right to contribution from the state; But grasped the wilderness with both his hands And wrung from it these fair and fertile lands. His lofty dwelling, sturdy to this day, Upon the hillside overlooks the Bay. And in its windows yet are lamps that he Would light for vessels making in from sea. |

Withal, he gave the village Church near-by
His help to keep its staunch, its tower high, So high, its haughty steeple still decides The course of vessels, trading in our tides, And constant counsels them upon the way That they should hold when entering our Bay. And from the belfrey there, I daresay they can hear the bell at ev'ning any day They may be sailing then, about the bay, And find its notes as soothing, as to me They are, on list'ning to them from the sea. |
| As wines gain flavour, as infused by seas
They're freighted over, or say Portuguese, So music, as it floats o'er waters calm Drinks as from these, enhancing thus its charm. As for myself, just why I do not know, Perhaps a longing for the long ago. The music of a Church or Chapel bell Borne on me o'er a harbour casts a spell. For whatso'er it has of stroke or toll. Moves me, as to possess my very soul! |

But let us to Old Caleb's place repair,
To look again upon his homestead fair- To learn, that here, out language may be terse, For it would be unfitting to rehearse O Caleb, your achievements, when us nigh Are witnesses to these that cannot lie- Memorials, yet present, to commend You to remembrance constant, worthy friend! |
| I am but little more than stranger here,
And of his homestead only late aware; But rek'ning what the ancient men here say Of him, the reverence that yet they pay To his good works, whereon they're prone to dwell, 'Twould seem, he served his God and neighbour well; Then as service such, we're bound to trust. May he receive the guerdon of the just! |
