Tillie Tinkham is cutting a sleeve
according to the directions for "The Circular Long
Sleeve"
from "The Workwoman's Guide" published in 1838.
Elizabeth says "I found the pincushion, Tillie."
Mummy is having a fitting. Elizabeth
stands on a chair holding the pincushion for Tillie and observing
the little seamstress at work. Elizabeth is learning sewing
skills from Tillie. Tillie is checking to see if the sleeve is to
her liking.
As Tillie continues to go about her work,
little Cynthie comes in asking "Mummy, may I please have
some jam?" Elizabeth tells Cynthie "You will have to
wait, Mummy is being pinned by a mouse!" Mummy says that
after Tillie is finished and she has changed into her frock and
apron that she will get her littlest darling some jam.
