Think about this...
National Security Strategy of the USoA by GW Bush
"Our Nation's cause has always been larger than our Nation's defense. We fight, as we always fight, for a just peace—a peace that favors liberty. We will defend the peace against the threats from terrorists and tyrants. We will preserve the peace by building good relations among the great powers. And we will extend the peace by encouraging free and open societies on every continent."

Alternatively, consider this...
For most people, September 11 was a tragedy. But for the Bush administration, it was an opportunity to expand American power abroad. They first used the tragedy of Sept. 11 to unleash a war against the innocent people of Afghanistan, killing more civilians than were killed in the twin towers attack. Now the Bush regime has turned its sights on Iraq, a country that they have already pummeled with sanctions and bombing raids over the past decade. The war abroad has been accompanied at home by a crackdown on civil liberties and the scapegoating of immigrants. This war is not about "fighting terrorism," but about seizing control of Middle East oil and letting the world know that any regime that isn't an American sattelite must be smashed. These resources help to provide the political foundation for fighting back against the war drive.

But, this site offers, perhaps, the best context for war, yet...
The Project for the New American Century is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to a few fundamental propositions: that American leadership is good both for America and for the world; that such leadership requires military strength, diplomatic energy and commitment to moral principle; and that too few political leaders today are making the case for global leadership.
